Less than 2% of Deaf people around the world know Jesus. History has shown that the Christian world is not able to reach the Deaf world for Christ without Deaf people in leadership and actively involved in setting strategy and direction. In today’s world of vital partnerships, that requires a cadre of excellent sign language interpreters with expertise in ministry, missions, and Bible translation topics. First and foremost, such interpreters make it possible for Deaf people to have a seat at the table at national and international levels of leadership, and have input into any and all relevant conversations. Secondly, they allow Deaf people to pursue training opportunities offered by hearing organizations, which they can then adapt as necessary to their Deaf target audiences. Thirdly, when Deaf leaders are involved, hearing ministry leaders often learn from the Deaf leaders’ wisdom and experience in ways that positively impact hearing ministries as well. The global Body of Christ needs its Deaf brothers and sisters, and quality interpreters serve as a bridge to make those connections possible.
